The Stroke Resource RN is responsible for responding to all stroke activations in the ED. They will work collaboratively with the ED staff to coordinate and facilitate care of the stroke patient and ensure time goals are met for optimal patient outcomes. This RN acts as the liaison between ED, ICU, Charge RN and Access Center to coordinate efficient throughput, safe care, and handoff. During the time the RN isn’t facilitating the care of acute stroke patients in the ED, they will round on stroke patients in the ED/ICU, assist with transport of the stroke patient, and be available to assist staff as needed. They will act as a patient/family liaison in an effort to promote patient family centered care.


  • Responds to all stroke activations in the ED and provides clinical expertise in collaboration with all services providing stroke care
  • Coordinates and monitors the care of stroke patients throughout the hospital
  • Facilitates transportation of patients through the ED, Diagnostic Testing, Operating Room, Interventional Radiology, and elsewhere as needed until care of patient is transferred to designated nursing unit.
  • Ensures complete and accurate hand-off to ED, ICU or OR nurses
  • Acts as patient and family liaison


Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing required
  • Master of Science in Nursing or healthcare discipline preferred
  • Active RN license in Kentucky required

           Experience (required and preferred):

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical ICU/ED healthcare experience required
  • Experience working in certified Primary or Comprehensive Stroke Center required
